Church Shooting in Knoxville Strikes Close to Home
In Knoxville today a gunman entered one of the local Unitarian churches killing two and injuring several others, some critically. As this is the church to which my daughter and her family belongs, my son-in-law and oldest grandchild were present when this happened. Very scary stuff.
I'm not sure what to think or feel about this exactly. Obviously I'm relieved that my daughter and her family are fine. I've known members of this church for over 40 years, and dated one in high school. One of the previous pastors performed my wedding ceremony. This was a church that took an active, constructive role in the community. I never remember hearing criticism coming from this church but always a willingness to help in any way they could.
A neighbor of the shooter says the shooter had a problem with Christianity. (Hat tip Instapundit.) If that is the case, he chose the wrong church as Unitarians don't consider themselves Christian, at least not this congregation.
I suppose I'll never understand the level of insanity, anger or hate that drives a person to blindly kill others. Right now I feel much the same way I do whenever I hear of senseless killings anywhere. Saddened and mystified. Please say a small prayer for the victims of this incident.

Actually, the shooter had a problem with the "liberal movement":

So very sad. Were I close to those whose lives were lost I would be very angry as well. One cannot make sense out of the senseless.
