Assault on Free Speech

We already know John McCain doesn't care much about free speech. Now the left is renewing their assault on free speech and freedom of the press.
Our conclusion is that the gap between conservative and progressive talk radio is the result of multiple structural problems in the U.S. regulatory system, particularly the complete breakdown of the public trustee concept of broadcast, the elimination of clear public interest requirements for broadcasting, and the relaxation of ownership rules including the requirement of local participation in management. […]

Ultimately, these results suggest that increasing ownership diversity, both in terms of the race/ethnicity and gender of owners, as well as the number of independent local owners, will lead to more diverse programming, more choices for listeners, and more owners who are responsive to their local communities and serve the public interest.
In other words, Think Repression Progress wants more governmental regulation because nobody wants to listen to their ideas and blather.

Reportedly, Hillary Clinton and Barbara Boxer think denying freedom of speech and freedom of the press is just fine.

This is the game the left plays to continually rob you of your freedom. We must have "fairness", "diversity", "clear public interest", "more diverse programming", etc. What they're really saying is that not enough people listen to us to support a significant number of radio talk shows, so we recommend forcing you to listen. Who's going to determine "clear public interest", "fairness", and all that? They will of course.

The concept of freedom of speech and freedom of the press is quite simple. You say what you want, you write what you want, you publish what you want. You express yourself in other ways, like putting a crucifix in a bottle of piss or ripping pictures of the Pope in half.

Every regulation encroaches on these freedoms in some way. McCain/Feingold wanted to force bloggers to register, just like you must register guns. Incrementally they will steal all our freedoms if we let them. The thefts will be justified in the name of fairness, diversity, public interest and whatever other obfuscation the left can dredge up. Don't let them succeed.

Better starve free than be a fat slave.

Comments:
Maybe I am the knucklehead here... From a business perspective, you put an AM RADIO show on the airwaves. You gather listeners. Advertisers say 'hey you have these many listeners, I want to buy some time'. The AM Station makes money in ads$$ per hour. It sounds to me like the market decides who is successful, not congress.

What is not attractive to some of the congressional folks; this is a venue they cannot control, spin, etc. So, lets legislate a way to do this. I wish they had the same vigor to fix more pressing problems a.k.a. Illegal's, alternate fuel sources, CONGRESSIONAL ETHICS, but I digress.

AM is picking up some steam. Are they always telling the Truth? Nope. Do they have an agenda? Mostly. But they still have some good points of discussion - and I am somewhat rational to be able to discern propaganda from just a good discussion.

I vote every day with my fingers - I like channel X, I keep it on, I do not like Channel Y , I turn it off, they lose ratings over time, no advertisers, and off they go. Sounds like Air America, which I frankly enjoyed and thought worth listening.

I also listen to NPR, I think they have something to offer too... When you don't consider both sides a.k.a. FOX, MSNBC, CNN, Bloomberg, ABC, CBS, etc. it's too easy to become a zealot for one side and become myopic overall. As I have said before, I no longer see any difference between parties ( Repubs or Dem's)… one needs to spend time on all sides, as time permits.
