Rice Declared A Primary Cause of Global Warming

Maybe eating those little puffed rice cakes helps you lose weight but in doing so you're destroying the planet, you selfish oaf! Rice paddies are "a main cause of rising methane emissions in the 20th century." OMG!! No more fried rice at the local Chinese restaurant for me!
Methane emissions from flooded rice paddies contribute to global warming just as coal-fired power plants, automobile exhausts and other sources do with the carbon dioxide they spew into the atmosphere.

In fact, the report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change meeting this week in Bangkok concludes that rice production was a main cause of rising methane emissions in the 20th century. It calls for better controls.

"There is no other crop that is emitting such a large amount of greenhouse gases," said Reiner Wassmann, a climate change specialist at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines.
Yep, looks like those uppity vegetarians are harming the Earth more than us beefetarians.

Swamp gas is primarily methane. Maybe we should drain the Okefenokee and half of Louisiana. Whatever we do, we must do it fast!! The sky is falling!!

Welcome, Instapundit readers! Never imagined a post about rice paddies would get me a mention. But, I'll take it none the less.

Comments:
It is the evil crusader Zionist Uncle Ben who is to blame!

Less Uncle Ben's; more Roundup Ready no-till nitrogen-fixing leguminous cover crops.

The whole issue of rice paddies and methane is rather overblown. Despite more humans and animals on the planet, methane levels have stabilized over the past couple of decades, perhaps even decreasing somewhat. The reasons are uncertain, but conjecture is that improved rice farming methods have greatly increased yields, so that much less acreage is needed now than in years past. This article is simply part of the current media frenzy with global warming.

Anonymous has it right... Uncle Ben is the culpret... wait, he is a minority... lets see.... who can we blame now?

Good find DADvocate... and hope the instalanche brings you lots of hits as you so well deserve.

Thanks, GM. Just happened to hear this on the radio or TV. You and Woody are my inspiration in this area.

Henry B. - "This article is simply part of the current media frenzy with global warming." You are absolutely correct, which is why I posted it.

I wonder how much rice Al Gore eats. Judging from his girth, a lot!

How would you change your private life to protect the environment?

Well, currently all that methane from the Okefenokee is being used as fuel for a giant wildfire...not sure how that's helping the atmosphere, but Jacksonville allergy sufferers are less than happy.

As to keeping water out of parts of Louisiana, there are so many quips I could make, I can't decide which one to use.

As for the thing as a whole, rice paddies contributing to global warming? Global Warming when I grew up was an accepted fact, and something that we could do something about by changing small behaviors we knew were unhealthy anyway. Make cleaner burning fuel? Helps me breathe while helping the planet? Sold. Stuff like that.

Unfortunately, Global Warming has become the new cancer: everything causes it in some way. If folks really want to do something about it, they'll pick big contributors that also make life suck and go after those: traffic, dirty fuels, dependence on foreign oil etc.

But rice paddies?

It's been so long since I've been to Louisiana the Interstates weren't finished yet. I remember a lot of swamps that, undoubtedly, produce methane.
