Homeland Security Snafus

Today CNN ran this story concerning the Homeland Security funding list that included a bean festival but not the Statue of Liberty.
Instead, the department's database of vulnerable critical infrastructure and key resources included an insect zoo, a bourbon festival, a bean fest and a kangaroo conservation center. They represent examples of key assets identified in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, and Maryland.
Despite the obvious absurdity and expected, by me anyway, governmental incompetence of this situation, we should not forget the purpose to terrorism - to create terror and exaggerated fear.

Currently, I feel safe as long as I avoid federal government buildings and major financial centers. Living in the midwest, this is easy for me. But suppose bombs, poisonous gases, or biological agents were detonated or released at large flea markets, shopping malls, festivals and such a few times. Even if the number of fatalities and injuries were few, the level of terror would rise dramatically. No one would feel safe anywhere.

While the Statue of Liberty certainly needs protection, we need to remember that any gathering of people may be the target of a smart, evil terrorist.

Comments:
I tend to think that anywhere could be a target, and the best defense against terrorists, or even petty crime, is personal vigilance.

But I don't think the big, federal agents working the terrorism angle should overly concern themselves with a kangaroo conservatory unless their intelligence assets indicate a coming attack or a meeting of insidious operatives there.

I agree. But everyone at the kangaroo conservatory has been kink of jumpy...

as a person who has lived with terrorism for all his life, nearly got blown up twice, the instant terrorists make you change your life and how you live it, thats the moment they have won.

i was going to be in warrington

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrington_bomb_attacks. but i didnt feel like going, i was going to be in manchester when that bomb went off.. i live just over the water from ireland, they still car bomb, and petrol bomb over there, they even try to kill kids going to school.

we are more vigiliant, but we arent going to let those idiots change how we live our lives..

over 40 years of terrorism, thousands killed and maimed. dont let them change your life, or they will win.

America has never suffered the threats that the United Kingdom has until the disaster at the twin towers.

No-one denies it was a dreadful act, but exactly what did the same people think had been happening to the United in World War 2 and from the 1960's with the IRA bombings, We have never let the terrorists win by preventing us from going about our daily tasks, to do so would have let them win which they most certainly will
not win. I didn't hear any criticism about the bombings here in fact to the contrary people still say they didn't realise what was going on over here, didn't know or didn't care?

Little children (7 years of age) pipe bombed because they had to walk past houses in which people of the opposite religious beliefs lived in them and having to have a military and Police escort to school. Hospitals being bombed. Very nice that is. I must say.

Bigotry is all over the place not just in USA.

No one stops me from going where I want when I want, I deliberately went to London and travelled on the underground trains after the recent suicide bombers there. I also went back to Manchester after the huge IRA bomb went off there 10 years ago now.

The facts are prior to September 11th No part of the American mainland had suffered from bombings unlike other places in the world. I came as a terrible shock to the public as well as the horror of the that day that their territory is not as invulnerable as they thought.

They regularly say they didn't know what was going on over here, and I would say didn't know or didn't care.

Now I hear bleatings about peoples rights being erroded, tough luck, security measures are essential if you are going to beat the terrorists..
