The Slippery Slope of Gun Control

If gun control advocates tell you there is no slippery slope laugh in their face. We’ve had gun amnesty programs in the U.S. Look at the weapons amnesty program in the U.K.. It’s for knives!
A five-week amnesty aimed at tackling knife crime across Britain - the first of its kind in a decade - has begun.
Until 30 June people can hand in knives at police stations in England, Scotland and Wales without fear of penalty.
But police have warned that once the amnesty is over, tough action will be taken on those found armed with knives.
I presume if you buy a butcher knife you must transport it home in the trunk of your car or have a permit to carry it home. Crime victims don’t necessarily agree with this action.
However, some families of victims of knife crime have questioned the effectiveness of an amnesty, calling instead for tougher sentencing.
Just another example of government fighting crime by attacking and bullying the law-abiding citizens. Criminals don’t care what the law is concerning guns and knives. Criminals will always have knives and guns. Confiscating knives and guns from innocent citizens only makes them more vulnerable. Remember, the police usually arrive after the crime has been committed, when it’s too late.

Comments:
these knives they are talking about as the ones like machetes, and army knives with the serated edges. rather than the smaller kitchen knives, legally you cant buy a knife if your under 16, or the shops arent allowed to sell them to you.

knives are more in the press as we dont have guns, but its true criminals have knives, only the good citizens hand in their knives leaving them unarmed.

but this is just a knee jerk ruling by the PM. since only about 5 or 6 people have been killed with knives.. in the last week or so. but it wont stop anything all this is so that the government can say we did something.. see, we are good guys for doing it..thats all it is PR for the government

Mercurior- I didn't mention it but part of the irony is that the violent crime rate in the U.K. is so much lower than the U.S. But at some point needs to focus on catching the bad guys and leave the good guys alone.

I'm not a gun nut, never owned a pistol and only fired one a couple of times. I do have a couple of rifles and a shotgun leftover from my younger hunting days. Only one of them has been fired in the last 25 years and that was for a little target practice. I keep trigger locks on them at all times.

It just seems the government can invent an excuse to do almost anything.

exactly, the governments are trying to get into everypart of peoples lives, from weapons to even a fat tax yes taxing fat people for being fat. it gives them more power, and curtails our rights, thats all governments are there for not for us, but what they can get out of it, more personal power, when they retire from office they get jobs as consultants for groups that paid for their elections.. and so on

i have become convinced that governments dont actually care about the people anymore.

I agree. But the pretense of caring is how they justify their power grabs.

All it takes is for real folks to get involved, and take politics away from the activists on both sides, and start doing the people's business again.

Patrick, you're absolutely correct but I might miss "American Idol" if I do that. (Actually, I never watch it.)
